Back to basics: Microsoft tests overhauled Start menu in Windows 11 beta builds

What a mess. Every time I look at a Windows 11 screenshot I resolve to stay on Windows 10 as long as possible.

Horizon: Zero Dawn gets the graphical remaster a modern classic deserves

Looks good but seems like a totally unnecessary remaster. The original still looks great to me on PC.

Microsoft reiterates “non-negotiable” TPM 2.0 requirement for Windows 11

I'm basically in the same boat - upgrading from a 2015 MacBook to an M4 one recently. And really the only reason I did was because I wanted to try some virtualization stuff with Apple Silicon for a side project. While Apple stopped shipping new MacOS versions for 2015 computers some time ago...

Microsoft reiterates “non-negotiable” TPM 2.0 requirement for Windows 11

There was an era when a 2 year old PC was considered ancient too. Now the PC market is "mature" and for most people there's not much that a 2024 PC can do that a 2015 PC cannot. The cell phone market is getting there too, the reasons to upgrade phones so frequently are dwindling. However...

The new Ars Technica front page design is coming!

Just to complain one more time about the loss of information density. Here is an ars article on an iPhone 15 Pro with zoom set to 50% in safari and text size set to small in ars preferences. I can only read the first paragraph (sentence really) of the content. It also looks like dark mode even...

SpaceX’s next Starship launch—and first catch—could happen this weekend

Has SpaceX moved their junk off of CaH's land yet? https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/23/business/cards-against-humanity-musk-texas-land/index.html

Welcome to our latest design update, Ars 9.0!

After playing with Neutron Star view I noticed a few things: 1. The keyboard navigation is really nice and makes total sense to me (thank you for Vim bindings here!) 2. It's pretty unintuitive that middle clicking or ⌘-clicking the headlines doesn't open the article in a new window. Instead it...

Welcome to our latest design update, Ars 9.0!

Reducing the browser zoom also makes the content area narrower, which is already too narrow at default zoom IMHO. It also does little to remove all the new padding. Setting the font size option in my Ars profile preferences affects the forum, but doesn't seem to affect the main site. Don't know...

Welcome to our latest design update, Ars 9.0!

I keep thinking about this rationale for the loss of information density and the thing that keeps popping into my mind is the classic parental adage: "If all you friends jumped off a bridge would you do it too?"

The new Ars Technica front page design is coming!

One other thing I noticed is that in light mode only the background "behind" the article thumbnails changes. So there's not really a light mode for the front page anymore - just dark mode with light background and dark mode with dark background. Maybe that's a bug? Edit: Playing with it more...

The new Ars Technica front page design is coming!

Thanks for this - I didn't have any "before" pictures to draw from. It's crazy that the headline is now half the screen. I'm the kind of guy who still codes with 8-10pt fonts at 40 years old so this change is very annoying to me. Changing the font size in preferences doesn't make a ton of...

I home-automated my garage door, finally, with a ratgdo

Wanted to mention the add-on I use: OpenGarage. The nice thing about this one is that it includes an ultrasonic sensor for detecting the door or car.

Tesla chair says Elon Musk needs $46 billion pay plan to stay motivated

Thing is, he literally almost can't devote less time to Tesla. He's running Twitter, xAI; he's CTO at SpaceX; and he's also involved in Neuralink somehow. Plus he's posting on Twitter all day long and doing interviews with Alex Jones. Would be surprised if he spends more than an hour "working"...

CDC puts US doctors on alert for measles outbreaks amid global surge

In a way vaccines have been too successful. There's no longer a cultural memory of friends or relatives having to deal with these diseases so it's easy for ideas like "measles is no big deal" to take root. This problem is eventually self-correcting, but at the very high cost of many sick and/or...

    Why we need wild bees

Yes, but it's best to plant flowers that are native(ish) to your area. Some common introduced species marketed for polinators, like butterfly bush, don't provide very good nutrition for North American bees. While popular ornamental flowers, like tulips, don't provide much nectar. If you do...

Wyze Garage Door Controller review: Open the garage bay door, Google

If you want something more open source and without a monthly fee, I recommend OpenGarage. It uses ultrasonics instead of a camera to detect garage door state as well as garage occupancy, which I think is a better and simpler solution: https://opengarage.io/ If you have a raspberry Pi or the...

Elon Musk provides detailed review of Starship’s first launch—and what’s next

Would have been nice to see more fact checking and analysis. As it is, this kind of reads like a regurgitation of a press release.

After the death of Stadia, VP Phil Harrison has left Google
