Lakers Forward Had It Backward

Mention of “Chick,” a memoir of Chick Hearn, reminded Superior Court Judge Kelvin Filer (a rabid Laker fan) of the broadcaster’s offbeat introduction of forward Jim McMillian.

“I distinctly recall,” Filer said, “that in Jimmy Mac’s first game, Chick said, ‘Ladies and gentleman ... into the game for the Lakers is the forward from Columbia University who was an academic All-American in college ... a very smart ballplayer ... and he has his pants on backward!’ ”

Testified Filer: “Jimmy Mac was running around the court with his drawstring hanging from the back of his shorts.”

Strawberry wrote in the New York Times that one upside of an unusual first name is “it can derail otherwise inevitable questions about your famous parents or grandparents. ‘Strawberry? Were your parents high? Crazy? Mean?’ ” Saroyan said her mother explained: “We wanted it to be fun to have a kid. Why have just another Jane or Debbie?” Strawberry’s sister’s name, by the way, is Cream.
