William J. Bennett, the Republican Party activist, former Cabinet secretary and “Book of Virtues” author, said he was giving up the high-stakes gambling that has cost him millions over the last decade.
“This is not an example I wish to set,” he said. “It is true that I have gambled large sums of money. I have also complied with all laws on reporting wins and losses,” Bennett said in a brief statement issued through Empower America, the conservative think tank he runs.
Some Atlantic City, N.J., and Las Vegas casinos have estimated his total losses at more than $8 million.
