Savanna Ends Season With a Victory

Michael Gonzalez rushed for 167 yards in 38 carries and scored one touchdown as Savanna earned its first victory in the last game of the season, defeating Magnolia, 23-14, Thursday night in an Orange League game at Western High.

Magnolia (1-9 overall, 0-5) took an early 6-0 lead after receiving the opening kickoff and driving 57 yards in 10 plays to score on sophomore Tim Beaty’s four-yard run.

Savanna (1-9, 1-4) answered on its first possession, going 68 yards in 16 plays with Gonzalez tying the score on a five-yard run early in the second quarter.

Savannah took the lead for good on its next possession, with Ronnie Castaneda kicking a 28-yard field goal.

The Rebels made it 16-6 in the third quarter, when Ross Ramirez recovered a Beaty fumble and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown.

The Sentinels came right back, driving 71 yards in 16 plays. Quarterback Kevin Arbiso scored on a two-yard run and Beaty ran for the two-point conversion to make it 16-14 with 9:01 to play.

But Savannah countered with Donnell Johnson’s 21-yard touchdown run.
