Concertos Praised

Mark Swed displays his usual elitist condescension in his review of Lukas Foss’ two piano concertos, which he dismisses as “outmoded juvenilia,” “passing fancies” and “historical curiosities” that were “dredged up” for concerts and a recording by the Pacific Symphony (“Foss Meets Younger Self in Two Concertos,” April 28).

Granted, the concertos may not be masterpieces, but they are indeed “worthy, neglected” pieces deserving of revival, unlike the “more important” avant-garde music (i.e., serial, atonal and aleatoric garbage) that Swed so obviously prefers.

The Pacific Symphony deserves praise for programming unknown music that people might actually want to listen to, instead of merely endure.
