Arum Agreement Includes Fine, One Year of Probation

Lawyers for boxing promoter Bob Arum and representatives of the Nevada State Athletic Commission have worked out a non-binding agreement on disciplinary action to be taken against Arum, The Times has learned.

In advance of Arum’s appearance Wednesday before commission members, the Nevada-based promoter has agreed to a fine and one year of probation for his admission in a New Jersey court case that he secretly paid $100,000 in 1994 to Bob Lee, the former International Boxing Federation president, to get a fight sanctioned between heavyweights George Foreman and Axel Schulz.

The maximum the commission is permitted to fine Arum is $250,000.

After hearing Arum’s explanation of his New Jersey testimony, the five Nevada commissioners could elect to ignore the agreement and levy a stiffer penalty such as suspending or revoking his promoter’s license.

But a source close to the negotiations said the commissioners are expected to stick to the agreement unless damaging new evidence surfaces.
