Anderson Signs With Spurs

Shooting guard Derek Anderson’s wish came true Friday when he became a former Clipper after signing a two-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

Anderson, who averaged nearly 17 points last season, had hoped to get the Clippers to work a sign-and-trade deal but ended up signing with San Antonio for $2.25 million for the upcoming season. Anderson has an out clause for the 2001-02 season.

“This is about your future,” Anderson said. “This was a hard decision. . . . I don’t think I got about 10 hours of sleep all week.”

The Clippers considered Anderson expendable after picking up swingmen Quentin Richardson and Corey Maggette on draft day.

Denver, Miami and Portland led a group of teams that wanted Anderson, but he chose the Spurs because they are expected to have more cap room available for the 2001-02 season and may be able to grant him a larger contract.

Forward Maurice Taylor is expected to follow Anderson out the Clipper door.

After reports had him signing with Orlando, Taylor may end up with Toronto after a late run by the Raptors. Taylor could get more money in Toronto than he would with Orlando, which is nearing the salary cap.
