Man Dies After Setting Self Afire at Courthouse

A Garden Grove man who set himself on fire Friday in front of the Superior Court in Westminster died this morning at UCI Medical Center in Orange with family members at his bedside, a hospital spokesperson said.

Muhammad Qureshi, 50, doused his clothes with gasoline and set them on fire Friday.

He was rushed to the hospital with about 80% of his body burned, the spokesperson said.

Qureshi was protesting a court injunction that kept him from entering City Hall, the Westminster police station or the Islamic Society of Orange County’s Garden Grove mosque.

Officials say Qureshi was known for disruptive behavior at City Hall and the mosque.
