Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 12, L.A. Baptist 0 (6)--The Olympic League Eagles (28-1-1) romped to their first Division V title since 1995 at Long Beach.
The Knights (18-7) were the fourth playoff team shutout by Calvary Chapel, which outscored its opponents, 55-1, in five games.
Senior right-hander Brett Young (15-0) pitched 5 1/3 innings to win his fifth playoff game. Senior shortstop Chad Sterbens drove in three runs with two hits, stole two bases, and scored four runs.
The only run scored on Calvary Chapel in the playoffs was by Santa Monica St. Monica, its third playoff opponent. Otherwise, the Eagles kept opponents scoreless in 29 of 30 playoff innings.
L.A. Baptist, the third-place team from the Alpha League, had its best chance to score in the fifth when it loaded the bases with one out. But Richard Wendt’s fly to center was not deep enough to score Matthew Myers from third and Andrew Peterson was called out on strikes.
