Tennis Roundup : Lendl Shows That He’s ‘in Control’ in Australia

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia needed only 47 minutes to blitz Australian Craig Miller, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round of the $285,000 Australian Indoor championships Wednesday at Sydney.
“The players must learn that I am in control and that I win the points if the other guy is not good enough,” Lendl said. “I don’t feel under any pressure being the No. 1 player in the world.”
Fifth-seeded Henri Leconte of France also won his first-round match, downing Australian Davis Cup player Wally Masur, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Top-seededed Tim Mayotte shook off the loss of a long, hard first set and beat Cary Stanbury, 6-7, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the third round of men’s singles in the Japan-Asian Open championships at Tokyo.
In the second round of women’s singles, top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina trounced Kristin Kinney, 6-0, 6-0, while third-seeded Lilian Dresher of Switzerland downed Japan’s Akiko Kijimuta, 6-2, 6-0.
Third-seeded Vijay Amritraj of India and sixth-seeded Mark Flur were upset in the $94,000 Ramat Hasharon Grand Prix tournament at Tel Aviv, Israel.
Amit Naor of Israel defeated Amritraj, 6-1, 7-6, while Jeremy Bates of Great Britain knocked out Flur, 6-4, 6-4.
